The death occurred at Hokitika on 'Saturday morning of Mr Alexander William' Bock, head of the firm of Johnson and Co., aged 60 years. An old identity of Masterton. in the. person of Mr James Fitzgerald, passed away at Sol way Home on Saturday. The deceased, who had reached the great age of 88,, followed the occupation of a market gardener and milkman in the early days. He was an industrious man, and highly respected by all who knew him. His 'funeral will leave the Roman Catholic Church for. the Masterton Cemetery at two o'clock this afternoon.

Tho Very Rev. Dean McKenna, who will have completed his twenty-five years as parish priest of Masterton on November 23rd, contemplates taking a trip to Ireland early in the New Year, accompanied by his brother, the Rev. Father McKenna r-f Pahiatua.. and expects to return about the end of the year. As the Dean's health has not been of the best of late, it is hoped that he will be much benefited by the trip. The Dean is making the trip Home with the primary object of seeing his mother, who is now in her eighty-third year.

News have been received in Napier ■of the death of Mr John MoKinnon, at Stnrnoway. The deceased was one ■of the earliest settlers in Hawkers Bay. Bom in the ; island of Lewis (Outer Hebrides) in IS2j, he took to the sea,- and for twelve years lie pursued .that calling in the African tr.-ule —where he suffered shipwreck—in the East India Company's service, and on the Mississippi. Tn 1854 he came to Melbourne as mate of the ship Kossuth, and then made his way to tin's country as mate of the brig Rock wood. Later Mr McKinnon took the ferry at Clive, and in 1863, settled at Arapawanui. Here lie prospered, and was well known and •highly respected all over the district. He was an early member of the Napier* Harbour Board and a. member of the first Wairca County Council. Tn 1898 he celebrated bis golden wedding. He died at the age of 87:

Mr K. Welch. <f Master-ton, who with Mrs Webb, returned last week from a visit to Europe, was tendered a. welcome in the Club Hotel on Saturday evening. Mr 0. R. Sykes, M.P., presided, and there was a large and representative leathering of prominent citizens and business men. A number of toasts wore honoured, and many of those present had a few words of welcome to extend to their returned townsman, each one expressing pleasure at seeing Mr Welch looking so well after his trip abroad. Mr Welch responded, ami made some interesting remarks regarding his experiences and the impressions formed of the Old Country. A number of songs and recitations were contributed, and a happy gathering terminated with the singing of . Anlcl Lang Syne.
