BOWLING NOTES.
(By "Jack.")
Jack, like the littlo Chiiia ball of that name, has been sleeping all tho u inter, ta far as tho game of bowls is concerned, but he is now going to bo vt'i)' much alive, and hopes occasionally to coJitributi' to these columns. If the unseisonablo weather of the past few weeks continues, it will bo a case of having nothing t-o say, as bowls i an not be much enjoyed when Jupiter i'iuriiiH has matters all his own way.
Mom hers of the M-a.stert.on Bowling L'lub are now beginning to think of tiie competitions, entries for which closed on Thursday. .Judging by tho entries, tho p'ay this so;&ou will be holly contested. Many of last season s players are developing into good bo viers, and the selection committee ui' l have to consider their claims when picking teams for the intcrcliil) competitions.
A largo number have joined the club this season, and it is not unlikely that a "colts' " competition •>\nl eventuate. This would bo better postponed till about February, when the "youngsters" will have learned to "fee!" themselves.
During tho progress of a match on Thursday a bowler, who is noted for hi.s good looks, was, in great earnestness and great sincerity, called "a boMity" by his skip, because he happened to make a, good shot. If "Jack"' were the object of that romyrk, he would most certainly bring iin action for slander against that skip.
At a meeting oi' the Wairarapa Bowling Centre, held at Carterton on Wednesday evening, the drawings for "Booth Cup" and "Shield" interclub competitions were made. An innovation in tlie shape of dividing the players of "the clubs having a strong membership, into Thursday and Saturday players, was sanctioned with the result th.'.t the Mastorton and Carterton Clubs will play Thursday nit-ii for the "Booth Cup" and Saturday men for the "Shield."
For the "Shield" competition thefollowing are the drawings: Nov 23. Masterton v. Carterton, at Maste.ton; Featherston v. Greytown, at Featherston; Dec. 7, Greytown v. Masterton, at Greytown; Featherston *. Carterton, at Featherston; Dec'2l, Carterton v. Featherston, at Masterton; Masterton v. Greytown, at C.u'terton. The second round will ,'im.nience about the last Saturday in .•"January, when the order of play will bi the same as above, except that the localities of play will be altered.
In order to get the first round for '..'.ic "Booth Cup" finished before l Tirislsnas, competitors will have j.iculy of piny for their money. These .'•re the drawings: Xov. 14, Greytown v. Carterton, at Greytown; Mastert.ii v. FeathersLon, at Masterton; Martinborough, a bye; Xov 21, Mas:«rtou v. Carterton, at Masterton; Mirtin'jorough v. ■Featherston, at JVariinborough ; Greytown, a bye; i)■■(.-. ■"), Martinborough v. Masterton, •:ii Martinborough; Greytown v. Featherston, at Greytown; Carterton, a bye; Dee. 12, Masterton v. Greytown. at Masterton; Carterton v. Martinborough, at Carterton; Featherston, a bye; "Dec. 19, Martinborough v. Greytown, at Martinborough; (♦'arterton v. Featherston. at Carterto.'i; JVlasterton, a bye.
Well done, Martinborough! This i'i'.le town has recently formed a fine littic club. "Jack" wishes it the best of success. Featherston possesses a. fine lot of sports, who, in spite of dcfc'U, never get . weary, and novella:! to keep ;:n appointment. Martin'.;orongh will do likewise.
Martinborough has joined the Wairarapn Centre, but Fketaluma lms deferred joining until next year.. A warm welcome by every club in the Wairarapn awaits Ekotahnna. -Its green, I her, i s to lie opened shortly. Masterton will probably send a contingent to the baptismal cereItllllV.
In spite df the boisterous weather Foathorrton cam;-, to Masterton to do battle for the "Booth 1 Cup." The southerners, though badly defeated, .played a plucky game, and as the season wears on, the result of practice should help them considerably. Masterton won by 79 to 35 points. The scores were as follows (Masterton rinks fining mentioned first in each
instance): Chapman, Hughes, Archer, BJinkhou.se (n) 20 v. Nix, Henry, Harrison, Burton (s) 16; Richards, Hendry, Staples, Scott (s) 32 v. Higginson, Knowles, Holsborough, IJenton (s) 10; Carpenter, Rose, Wilkes, Townsend (*) 27 v. -Ayro, Crawford, locker, Elliott (s) ( J.
Several other games were also played: Georgeson, Mitchell, Kilgour, Prentice (s) 2<> defeated Condor, Hughan, Chamberlain, Hcwell (s) HDickens, Ford, Ewington, Mntrio (s) 10 lost to Wingato, Cave, Hairy, Guild (s) 20.
The Selection Committee now has the- task of dr.iwing and placing the players for the various club competitions. Jt is hoped that these will be available by Monday next.
The Wairarapa Centre, having now get into its .stride, has instituted a competition to decide, which is the champion rink of the Wairarapa. This will prove a very popular event. Any team from any club affiliated to the Centre may challenge tlio holders. The Centre decided that its president should nominate the first holders. Whyte, Hansen and Fisher (s) of the Carterton Club were selected. The president of the Mnsterton Bowling Club was likewise delegated to nominate the first challengers. The chosen are Ewington, Townsond, O. Pragnell and Hollings (s). The first .gamo takes plice at Carterton this afternoon.
The president (Mr P. L. Hollings) of the Ma.ste.rton Club has kindly donated trophies for a rink competition to take place after the Auckland, tourr.ament is over. Tin's should prove helpful to the "colts,* who will be placed in the teams.
