SPANISH PRIME MINISTER KILLED. MURDERER ATTEMPTS SUICIDE. (Received November 13, 9.23 a.m.) 5! A DIM I) November 12. Senor Jose Ca-:a!ejas, the Prime Minister of Spain has been assassinated. Tin- name of the assassin is Manuel Serrao .Martin, aged 2-S years. It is believed hi* act was incited by fiery speeches at Sunday's annual demonstration in connection with Se;r Ferrer's execution. He stopped to look in a shop window near the Ministry of this Interior, when the man went up to him and fired four shots point blank.. Senor Canalejas fell dead, shot through the brain. While the Prime Minister lay on the pavement the assassin fired again, and then shot himself. He is still alive. ACTING PREMIER. HEARTRENDLNG SCENE. (Received November 13, 12.35 p.m.) MADRID, November 12. .Senor Garcia Prieto, Foreign Minister, is Acting-Premier. There was a heartrending scene when the widow and children of Senor Canalejas were informed of his death. Senor Canalejas, who was born iti Galicia. in JBSl t was the son of an engineer. Ho was educated at-Mad-rid. At i 1 k 1 age of ten he translated from the French a work entitled "Louis, or the Young Emigrant," which was published. When his father became Director of Railways at Madrid, and Badajoz Jose was made general secretary, and he at once set about studying all public questions in any way associated with railways. He also found time to write two volumes of the History of Latin Literature. He look part in scientific and political discussions, and expounded his political and democratic ideas, and became a follower of Don Christine? Martos. lie first took his seat in the Cortes in 1881. and was a member of ,th« Opposition. Later bo criticised the condition of the army, and in . 1887 was chosen President of a Commission of f-quiry into the question < f armv reform. Tn 1888 he was the third Yice-President of the Cortes. He has hold various Ministerial offices, and has written numerous pamphlets and articles for the Press. In 1902 he was Minister of Agriculture. Industry and Commerce in the Sagasta Cabinet, and had great difficulty to contend with owhg to the indecision of his Ministerial colleagues. Tn snhLiberal Cabinets he was a Minister of Finance and Justice. Tu Februarv. 1910. Senor Ca'ialejas became Prime Minister.
