MR BAKER'S PICTURES

KALK JIY AUCTION

I' • flu splendid collection . f pictures vvhicJi have been on exhibition at the Chib Cafe during the last tow days, in nd which arc by the brush of Mr W. G. Baker, a Now Zealand artist of repute, will be offered for sale nit auction in the Club sample rooms at i'2. 30p.rn. to-morrow by MessraA. ,J. Johnson and Co., auctioneers, Mr I Ba.ker lias Jong ago acquired a high j reputation as an interpreter of New | Zealand landscape and the pictures which he has sent to Master ton will serve to even enhance the good impression which his fine collection at the Chris tchurch Exhibition made op the public mind. New Zealand is justly tamed for the grandeur of her scenery, and no one can look upon Mr Baker's pictures without feeling that he gives us truly typical and characteristic touches in all that he portrays. Whether lie paints in oils or colours, the same success attends his brush. The dominating feature of his work is that lie delights in warm and generous tints. Tho rosy glow of J the morn, the bright shafts of sun- I light glinting on the hillside, the mellow hues of evening, are constantly with him. There is, too, a majestic I depth about his forest foliage, and a limpid transluency about his rushing j ! water which is eloquent of our moun- I tain torrents. Mr Baker is exceed- j inglv happy in his depiction of Miiori I life, and whether it is the pa nestling j on tho river bank, or the canoe on the . river itself, * their introduction, into the scene gives a liunwn charm to the subject which is always welcome to the Xcw Zealander who takes a. pardonable, pride in the romance of the Maori. Altogether, Mr Baker has 'lO, subjects on view, embracing all that is best of our mountains, rivers and valleys, and so even are they in merit , that scarcely two people can be found i to agree upon one as possessing merits greatly superior to any other. This fact jtilone is justification .'or asking our readers to take the time ■ and trouble to make a personal in- J spection of the pictures, for by this ' means alone can their individual i worth be assessed. Mr Baker is only ( too anxious that the public should ! pay his gallery a visit. I
