We have no desire to refer in other than terms of admiration to tho splendid spirit which ig prompting the ladies of Masterton and otlier centres to make liouse-to-houso collections on behalf of tho waifs and strays of England, where immoa.surablo wealth lies in smug contentment at the very doors of ihomes for the relief of tlie poor. Wo do think, however, that investigation should be made concerning tho condition, of families nearer home. There are in New Zealand scores of institutions for the relief of the poor and needy.. Are these as well provided for as tliey -should be? Have wo no poverty in our own townships? Are thero not families in Masterton which would be glad of a little relief? Beforo sending relief to other countries, we should be sure that we hare done onr duty by those among u*.
