NOVICE HANDICAP
Wretched weather conditions did not prevent eleven members of the Masterton Harrier Club from turning <yut on the Park Oval hi,st evening to' ■compete in the final run of the season, which took the form of a novice handicap, run over a distance' of 24 milea. The race was one of the most exciting and keenly contested ' events yet held by the Club, the winner, L. Cook, finishing half a yard in front I of G. Hootl; The former led through-j out ; ,'"and after making all his own running,-lind "enough'left to stall off ■a strong challenge by, G- Hood, who 'finished''very strongly. Both placed men started from scratch, jtfid, as the winner made all his own running, the performance •was hill of merit, his. time being 15 min SOsec, which was distinctly goodconsidering the stato of the going The closeness of the finish is shown Tjy the fact that the second man's timo was 15vnin 51s.ee. A handsome gold medal, presented by Mr G. W. Sellar, for the winnc of the sealed handicap, resulted as follows : W. Langley (hep Srain lOsec), time 16min 57sec, 1; F. Dickinson (hep. Imin 40sec), time lGmin 4.osec, 2; C. Laßoche (hep. Imin 4Gsec), 3. Langley's performance was a very creditable one, as ho is one "of the youngest members of the Clubj and stood to his task in a manner that should bo an example to older meni*ber3.
