DISTRICT NEWS
PONGAROA.
A church parade of Friendly Societies, sports, and football clubs, and Scouts, headed by the Pongaroa Brass Band of fifteen instrumentalists, took place in ideal summer weather last Sunday afternoon. After the procession from the Foresters' Hall to the Presbyterian Church was finished, a special service was conducted in the church, there being about one hundred persons present. Mr J<%s. Rattray preached an appropriate and interesting sermon ba-sed on the fourteenth verso of the second chapter of the first epistle of John: "I have written into you young men because ye are strong." The whole -function was most successful and being tho first of "the kind held in the district created a great deal of Interest, bringing together a very largo number of settlers with their wives and children.

The company is paying at the rate of for butter fat, home separated, ami Hid supplied otherwise. The present season should prove a very satisfactory one to both company and supplier. Practice by the club is progressing steadily ■ The .school committee at its meeting, which takes place on (Saturday night, will consider arrangements ror a railway excursion for the children instead of or in addition to a picnic. ' Tho weather at present does :iot look promising for shearing. Several sheds were to have stalled to-day, and ! others later in the month, but the j.work is held up pending a chang?. | Sheep-owners are dreading a repetiI tion of last- season, when a number <: r ■ sheep were lost through the cold aiii' changeable weather.
Mr X. Neilsen has returned homo after three months spent in the Mastorton Hospital, which he entered t<-> undergo an operation for appendicitis.
