( Mr and Miss Irving of Greytown, received tho sad news on, Monday morning of the sudden death, at Invercargill on Saturday night, of their brother'a wife, Mrs H. S. Irvirig. A wide circle, cf friends will re.ffret to hear of the death of ; tho Rev. John Ross, an. old resident of Turakina, but latterly of Wauganui. Deceased, who was in his 83rdi year, was wsll-known and! highly respected. At Inst evening's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council Or. Prentice moved a- resolution of welcome to Cr. Elliott, and said that the councillors were all pleased to see Cr Elliott back in his position in the Council after his prolonged illness. The Mayor endorsed Cr. Prentice's remarks. Cr. A. H. Herl>ert has been selected by the Eketahuna Borough Council for nomination to fill the vacancy on the Wairarapa Hospital and-Charitable Aid Board, Caused by tile dea£h of Mr McArdle, Mayor of Pahiafua, who represented both Boroughs. There is said to be an understanding that the representative for tho joint boroughs .shall be. chosen alternately from each district.

On Saturday afternoon, a wellknown Wairoa settler, Mr A. R. Duff, passed away, Mr Duff has been in Wairoa since 1866, andi was the owner of Clydebank station acquired bv the Government some few years .ago. The deceased was a bachelor, but he leaves several relatives in, New Zealand and abroad. The late Mi* H; A. Duff, of Kereru, was Jiii brother, and his. widow, , son andi two daughters now reside .there.- He also has two other nephews, 'sons of Surgeon-General Duff, Messrs J. L. and H. L. Duff. The latter gentleman was lately Acting-Governor of Nyassaland, British Central Africa, and a writer of some note. He published a standard; work on Nyassaland, and also the only book ever written in- the Cbinyanga language. Mr Dtiff was over 70 years of age.
