The cricket season opened yestercfiy with a match on the Oval, Masterton, between the- Hockey Cricket Club and Carterton VB," arid at Carterton with a match Masterton Amateur Athletics v. This match was played on the Park Oval and, being the beginning of the season, nothing of a sensational order was witnessed. Tho visitors were outclassed, although in the first innings they made a' fair stand. In their second they completely collapsed, only scoring three runs. A. Dixon was responsible for their downfall, taking seven wickets for one run, which must be something of a record. Carterton made 43 in their first innings, V. Fairbrother being chief scorer with 17. Masterton at their first attempt compiled (i.3, and tints won by an innings and 17 runs. A. Dixon with 17 was top scorer.
