CRICKET.
The cricket season opened yestercfiy with a match on the Oval, Masterton, between the- Hockey Cricket Club and Carterton VB," arid at Carterton with a match Masterton Amateur Athletics v. Carterton "A" team. The weather was perfect and the grounds were in good order for the opening matches. The following are the results of the Carterton match : Amateur Athletes (first innings)— Long 1, "Douglas o,Creelman 1, Bradbury 3, Rosson 1, Read 2, Welch 23, Rippon 6, Ward 6, Roberts 0, Hickson 18; sundries, 2; total, 63. Second Innings—Long 14, Douglas 11. Hickson 6, Welch 4, Ward 4 ; sundries, 3;-total, 39. Carterton A (first innings)— Shepherd 4, Gander 4, Banner 4, Johnson 0, Lindup 3, Whyte 0, Wilson 1, J. Lindup 20, Murphy 0, Banning 5, Waters 1; sundries, 9; total, 51. Bowling Analysis—Douglas 4 for 26, Long 3 for 8, Hickson 0 for 6, Bradbury 2 for 2. Second Innings—Banner 0, Lindop 17, Gander 5, J. Lindup 7, J. Banner .Whvte 13, Sheppiird 0, Murphy 0, Johnson 3, Waters 1, Wilson 0; sundries, 2; total, 48. Bowling Analysis—'Hickson 4 for 15, Long 5 for 9, Rippon 0 for 13, Bradbury 0 for 9, Douglas 1- forl. Grand Totals —Amateur, Ist innings, 63; 2nd innings, 3 wickets for' 39 ; total, 102. Carterton A, Ist innings, 51; 2nd innings, 48; total, 99Amateurs won by 3 runs and 7 wickets. HOCKEY CRICKET CLUB v. CARTERTON B. This match was played on the Park Oval and, being the beginning of the season, nothing of a sensational order was witnessed. Tho visitors were outclassed, although in the first innings they made a' fair stand. In their second they completely collapsed, only scoring three runs. A. Dixon was responsible for their downfall, taking seven wickets for one run, which must be something of a record. Carterton made 43 in their first innings, V. Fairbrother being chief scorer with 17. Masterton at their first attempt compiled (i.3, and tints won by an innings and 17 runs. A. Dixon with 17 was top scorer.
