DISTRICT NEWS
KAIPAKORO. A frost that took place last Thursday night damaged potato and other crops - . On Saturday a severe storm swept over the district, and snow lay for some time to the foot of tho bush hills. Tho weather has now cleared, but frosts may bo expected, whilst snow remains on the ranges. On Friday Messrs Hill and Barton's motor van came to a standstill while fording tho river. Horses were brought to the rescue, but they at first rebelled when asked to assist their fallen rival. This occasioned a ! delay of several hours, but finally tho van was drawn safely out, and was able to proceed on its journey. Upwards of a scoro of men are camped on the banks of tho Maknkalii Jliver. near where tho headworks for the Rketahtma water supply [ are to bo located. They aro to commence immediately tho work of clearing the ground for laying the pipes. Anglers report that fish are fairly plentiful in the Makakahi River this season. The fish are, however, somewhat shy of biting, and up to the prosent, no record bags have : been obtained. A fishmonger, who ventured into the settlement a fortnight ago, was warmly welcomed by housewives, and his load met with a ready sale. It is hoped that be may bo induced to pay weekly visits to the district. Quite a number of fanners from hero propose attending the Palmerston show this week. Owing to pressure of work, most of them are obliged to go and return on the ot>p, day, but as the train arrangements are fairly convenient, this can be done without great hardships having to be endured. MAURIOEVILLE. j On Friday evening the Hall Co. I held n social and, dance to raise sufficient funds to pay off the remainder ; of the debt on the piano. This, I understand, iias almost been accomplished. A southerly gale accompanied by snow and rain raged here on Saturday afternoon. A sharp frost experienced on Sunday night left its mark on tho early potatoos in many gardens. The Athletic Club has once more got under way. I understand that cash and trophies are well in hand, and given suitable weather, everything points to a successful sports meeting next Boxing Day. Mr R. Brooks .whose residence was destroyed by fire some time a£o, ha? begun the building of a fine six-room-ed cottage on tho old site. It is to be fitted with a hot and cold water service and other modern conveniences. The architect and builder is Mr W. '. Fisher of this town.
