CHESS.
WELLINGTON v. WAIRAEAPA. The match Wellington & .Wairaxapa was commenced oe. Saturday eyening in the Druids' Hall. The city team consisted of ten men only, several being unable to make the trip for various reasons. Most of the games were well contested, good chess being shown. Messrs F.> s Kuraraer, .T. Maunselll and C. Winchester were unable to. play for the local club, the bad weather no doiibt\ being responsible for the absence of the two former players. The visitors were welcomed by Mr G. A. Jones, Mr Kelling responding, after which play proceeded, nine of the games being completed before the time for adjournment. The set-to between Jones and Kelling will be completed this morning, tfco Masterton captain having,all his work cut out to hold his own with the redoubtable Kelling; but the game is anybody's so far. At the supper adjournment Messrs Kemble. Welch and C. Hoffeins received the prizes won during the past season, Mr J. Dagg's shield going to the former and Mr G. Jones' trophy, to the latter.
