Plymouth 60, Stratford ? 14, Wanganui ? 15, Hastings ? 16, Te Horo 1, Picton 30. ' • There are probably over 600 members, all told. The numbers of the members, however, do not give much indication of the quantity of eggs handled; for instance, Levin Circle puts through about 1400 dozen per week, more than another one • with double the membership. It is very gratifying to note that 1 the Utility Club in Christchurch has wisely decided to raise the standard of eggs eligible ,for the Competitions. Hitherto an egg weighing but an ounce and a half has passed muster but now the minimum willibe an ounce and three quarters. This is certainly a big step in the right direction, having in view the development of the export trade, which means any eggs sent to England will have to compete against the Danish article, -which fre-
quently goes over two ounces. Again,
too, while quality should always be i paramount, guantity, or full measure. I practically, runs neck and neck. The J public want as much as they can get for. their money.(we all do,) and an incentive to greater interna- Iconsumption is. the large egg. .There is no' doubt that : bv far, too many small eggs go on the market every week. The Utility Egg "Circle committee has decided to make the 28 th. of each month the regular pay day; .Members, should make it their business to call j for their' money as near that day as I possible. . I, We have had enquiries this season for isottings of /White Wyandottes. There do not appear to be many in the district an dif those do keep them, | vveiv wise in their generation, they ; vnultl find |he advantage of advertising in these columns. How is any-J one to know what von have unless you j _blow the t nun pet and somid the elm- I
Co-ooerative egg marketing, is strengthened hy each additional 'member that joins the ranks. Each one-, now in a Circle, should' use every endeavour to induce others to come in. The more streams that flow into the one channel the greater the force. Let these streams f!o>!' where they will., the country is inundated, the inhabitants go in fear of their lives, and with all the perhaps, not one stream is navigable for commercial craft..
Confine, pen in. and control these unruly waters and commercial Leviathans ride in triumph. The nnruly streams indicate the ones who stop outside egg Circles, whereas genera] co-operation would raise a force impregnant against all comers. •
Efrsx Circles, to-day, are stil] like the Nile at its sources-, of small power, but when the movement becomes universal, it" will be as powerful as tlie dam at Asscuan, controllable and beneficial. The. writer of the Dominion Poultry Notes ,in a recent article, referred to the extraordinary high prices now ruling for table poultry. Ten -to twelve shillings per pair, retail, is, he considers, beyond a joke. Even with our higher idea of living to-day, poultry for the table at these figures, cav only be classed sis luxuries. - Ducks; wo hear, are fetching, in Wellington, 7s Cd a pair, wholesale, but it is safe to assume these arc for top quality. Pekins and Aylesburys would probably if fat realise these prices, but one can : hardly expect Indian Runners to d" so, and those who are about to sell shrould estimate according to the kind to be disposed, whether heavy or j light. «
Elsewhere, it is announced that'thc propietor of the Utility poultry Farm give.s very libera] concessions to, Utility Circle members, requiring settings. The plant, though not very extensive. contains some useful specimens which sell well and pay well. As soon as the incubators and brooders are finished with for the season they should be thoroughly washed out with some strong -disinfectant, and not leave this work over till they are about to be used again next year. A strong spray pump should he used for reaching the corners and crevices. Eggs have taken a cteady rise, up to time of .writing and last* week reached a shilling per dozen in Wellington. wholesale.
