The tests are very satisfactory, : but it is expected that they will improve as feed hardens, Mr J. Dick has been promoted to tho position of first assistant at tho factory, and JVlr J. Sncll lias been appointed second assistant. Owing to the roughness of the road -between Eketahuna a nd Hastwells 1 quite a number of motorists and cyclists are using the short cut from Eketahuna via Ivaiparoro and Mount Brace to Mastorton. This road is in. good order, and shortens tho journe\ by about four miles, but the unbridged Makakahi Itiver has to be forded. The ford is at present in fair order, and motorcars seem able to negotiate it with comparative ease when the river is not flooded. Motor bicycles can be, wheeled over tho foot bridge, but this is not wide- enough for -bicycles with a s:idc car attached, and several incidents have occurred in connection with these. In one. case an attempt was made to<!.u< through the river, but tho rider of tiie bicycle was soon forced to dis mount and push his iron steed to the shore. Ho very generously the- occupant of tho side car to re I tain iiis seat, but notwithstanding his 1 generosity, both travellers received a good wetting before getting out of the stream. In another ease bootwero removed, and tho bicycle and side car were pushed carefully through j the water. Then half an hour was lost in getting the .machine into working order again. Several narrow escapes from falls have been witnessed where riders were travelling at top speed, owing to the banks on each side screening the river from- view until tho water's edge was almost reached. '

On Thursday evening a progressive euchre tournament, organised .by the school committee for tlie purpose of swelling the school funds, took place in the hall. About forty persons were present, and «. very enjoyable evening was spent. Mrs J. McAnulty was the fortunate winner of the ladies' prize, and Mr Dcnniston and Master L. Parker tied for the. gentlemen's. At the conclusion of the tournament supper was served, anrl dancing, which followed, wan kept up until .midnight.
