HAWKESBURY COLLEGE

IMPRESSIONS OF A MASTERTON

VISITOR

I On the occasion of his recent visit to Australia Mr William Terry, the well-known Lincoln and Romney breeder, of Masterton, paid visits of inspection to ihe Haw.kes.bury College and Wagga Agricultural School, in New South Wales. In conversation I with a Wairarapa Age representative | on Saturday Mr Perry stated that he [was delighted with his'-visit to the Hawkeshury College. He found in I Mr Potts, the principal of .the College, a man of brilliant attainments I who is doing excellent work for tho (Commonwealth. The site upon which \ the Hawkeshury. College stands is about 2000 acres in extent. There are about 160 young men students at the institution. r The .'-hole of the work on the farm is done by the students, under expert instruction,-,., Mr Perry has come-back an enthusiastic supporter of the movement to establish an Agricultural, .College and Agricultural High Schools-in the Dominion. He thinks that one College,, on. the* lines of Hawkeshury, would-be ample for New Zealand. The students have to pass scholarships and undergo a critical examination before they are admitted to the institution. Even after they are admitted, if they do.not display an aptitude . fdr,,tlie work, they are "sent' back' to "their, homes. Mr Perry says New South Wales is a long way in advance of New Zeajandin agricultural, methods. He was much impressed with the system of establishing agricultural plots in tho various districts. The.?© plots, which are about ten acres in extent, arc worked by the farmers themselves under Government supervision, and are in such positions that they are readily accessible to the public. "I have always beeii of opinion," said Mr Perry, "that we are wasting time in the Wnirarann in nf wheatgrowing. After vi«">h>f New South Wales, and th" immense territories that' arc devoted to wheataxowing. f'nm ~>oiv» +)}«> i ever convinced on the .subject."
