MOUNT LYELL DISASTER

FAILURE TO DESCEND THE MINE. HIS MAJESTY'S SYMPATHY. (Received This Morning, 1 o'clock.) HOBART, October 20. A party of nine descended to the 700 feet level at Mount Lyell for tihe purpose of recovering bodies. Noxious fumes compelled them to retreat. The blast furnaces have been allowed to run down, and smelting ""has been discontinued. Lord Dcnman has received a cable from the Colonial Secretary, expressing the sympathy of His Majesty the King and' the Government in the Mount Lyell disaster.
