HANDLING OF MANURES
THE WATERSIDE WORKERS' DEMANDS. AND THE MASTERTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. . The proposal of the N.Z. Farmers' Union that all manures should be packed in hags containing not more than 1121bs, for the convenience of the waterside workers, was referred to a. sub-committee of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce at its September meeting. The sub-committee /reported yesterday as follows : —"Tli.it in the opinion of this Chamber tli£~' proposal of the N.Z. Farmers' Union to pack manures in hundredweight bags would unnecessarily increase the cost to the farmer, and recommends that manures from oversea be packed in double sacks, each to weigh H ewt net, and to have four lugs. This would enable the packages to be easily handled without the use of hook 1 ?. The experience of local importers is that the use of paperlined sacks 's a failure." The president, said it seemed that the farmers were looking at the question from one point of view, and tbe Chamber of Commerce from another. It seemed that the Farmers' Union and the Labourers' Union, came dose together at times. Mr G. C. Sutnmerell, in moving th n adoption of the report, stated that if labourers could handle 2001b bags of wheat, they r«uld surely handle lb bags of manure, particularly a* the latter had four lugs. If manure, wnhandled in 1001b hairs, it would be difficult to stack. There would, besides. be the extra cost of stacking. Mr P. T. Spain seconded, the motion for the adontion of the report, which was carried.
