Asher at the residence of the bride's parents. • Tho death occurred .this week of one of the pioneer settlers of Pura—kanui, Otago, in the person of Mr James Baird. He was born in Dumfries, Scotland in 1832 and came to New Zealand in the Storm Cloud an 1860, and was at tho Gabriel Gully and the Dunstan gold rushes. In 1864 he returned to Port Chalmers •and took up his farm, which was then a bush sectioni at .Purakanui. A quiet wedding took place at tho Tesidence of Mr A. Gow, Eeatherston, on Wednesday morning, when Mr Henry Watson, of Oamaru, was married to Mrs M. W. Mitchell, of Oamatu. Miss Jean T. Buist, sister of the bride, acted as bridesmaid, and Mr G. A. Campbell was best man. The Rev G. K. St-owell was the oulciating minister. The bride and bridegroom left afterwards for Hastings, where their future home is to be. Mr J. H. Wishart, of Martinborcugli, who leaves this week for Sydney, was tendered a farewell social on Thursday evening,'upwards of 100 citizens iand friends being present. Mr Wishart was the recipient of a very handsome silver tea and coffee set and tray, suitably inscribed. During the evening songs and recitations were contributed by a number of .those present, and a long list of toasts were honoured. A pleasant gathering was concluded by tho sihging of Auld Lang Syne. The death occurred in Wellington on Thursday of Mrs Ann Jack, widow of the late Mr jJadlev Jack, formerly of Mastcrton, in her 75th year. The deceased lady, who resided in Masterton with her family for a numbor of years, was highly respected for iher bonovelont virtues. She leaves a family of two sons—Mr E. C. Jack (Dominion Secretary of the Farmers' Union), 'and Mr W. Jack (Welling-. lon manager for Messrs Keinpthorne, l' Prosser and Co. L The remains of tho deceased arc-to bo interred in the Jlasterton Cemetery this morning, the funeral leaving the railway station on the arrival cf tho 11.30 train from Wellington. It is with sincere regret that wo re- ! cord the death .of Mr Christopher H. Smith, -custodian of the Mastcrton • Commercial and Farmers' Club, Which occurred at the local hospital yesterday afternoon, after a protracted illness. The deceased, who was fifty-eight years of age, had. resided for a considerable period in the district. At one time he followed farming pursuits at Mauricevillo. He was an ardent sport and a genial friend. 'He was a member of the Masterton Lodge of Freemasons. Deceased leaves a widow and one daughter Chisholf, of Mauriceville). ' The funeral will leave St ' Matthew's Church for the Masterton Cemetery nt 10 o'clock to-morrow morning.
