A DESCRIPTION
j The new Church of St Matthe.v, Mastortoii, will bo ;v massive brick structure of. Gothic design, tho dimensions being as follows: Nave ; !M feet long and >l2 feet wide, by a height of 2(3 feet from the Jloor to wall plate, tho total height being s(> feet from ground line to the ridging. The Chancel wJI have a length of -lo feet by a width ot 21 foot, and is 28 feet from floor to wall plate. Organ chamber. 17 ft by 8 ft I) in, with motor pit 10 ft. by G ft. South Transept- 1(5 ft by 14 ft. Baptistry, 11 ft fi in by 10 ft off tile north side of the Nave, and two porches, also on I lie north side, one 1.1 ft G in by (0 ft and the other 13 ft (j i;t hy 7ft (i in. Tlj;' s latter gives access also to the Vestries, which are on two floor.-, each 2(5 ft by 1" ft f> in. To complete the scheme as designed by the architect, the To>ver on the south-east- corner of the Nave. 8-1 ft high, (the lower portion being the principal er-t ranee to the Navi on the south side), is left to be take:: in hand at some later date, when funds will allow.—ft is to bo Imped, howwer, that the vestry will be able to see their way to put this work in hand, as the completion of tho tower | would give a finish to the entire structure and be an ornament t:> the town. The tower is so designed as to enable a full pea! el bells to he hung therein. Tt may bo mentioned that the cohoiolo loundatioMs oT 1110 Tcwov are already in. Tho Morning Chapel and the Clergy \ estry, the tower as above mentioned and a small porch on the south side giving access to the south Transept, are all for the tmief being omitted in the present eon- ] tract, but all of which will be fiecess-1 ary to complete the structure as originally designed, and complete r. Chiwdi suitable and neeessarv for the requirements of the Parish. The external walls are faced with wire-cm bricks, but the internal faces are of pressed bricks, with moulded and chamfered bricks in window and door jambs, panels, arches, etc., all the bricks being supplied by the Silverstream Brick Company. In the west wall cf the Nave (and facing .Church Street), is a large -1 light window of white stone, each light of which is 20 ft long by 2 ft wide, whilst the o light ea; t window of chancel is also of stone, and is, we understand, to he fi I led 'with a stained glass memorial window, the gift of a parishioner. Tho roofs are of open timber construction, with wrought frame principals purlins and common rafters, boarded with T. and G. hoarding covered with felt and slates—the eaves being finished with ca ; st iron eaves gutters i'.nd down pi lies. | All the windows will be filled wth lead lights of Cathedral glass in diamond shaped quarries, in which arcalso provided a number of iron casements with patent opening bars for ventilation. There, together with Boyle's fresh air inlets *>tjd patent ventilating ridging the Full length tf Nave and Chance] should prove- ample for the proper ventilation and comfort of the building. The cost of the work at present under contract is about £6,600..t0 which however h°,r t-o be added architect's fees and other charges,—but the furniture and internal fittings have yet to be provided for.
