SUGAR COMMISSION
IMPORTANT EVIDENCE. WHITJE AUSTRALIA QUESTION. (Received Lat Night, 9.15 o'clock.) SYDNEY, October 17. Before the Sugar Commission Mr Knox, goneral manager of the Colonial Sugar Company, dealing with the riskiness of the industry, said that the Colonial Sugar Company had recently lost heavily as the result of the protective duties on sugar. The substitution of white ;.l*iboux for coloured labour was effecting an important contribution towards the solution of the white : Australia problem, and also by filling the unoccupied tropical areas, which constituted a direct temptation to Asiatic invasion, andvitally contributed to the solution of the defence question. Mr Knox in answer to questions covering the internal management of tlie company, declined to" reply on the strength of the High Court's decision.
