Ihe Hon. James Carroll, with | Messrs D. Buick, Coates and Payne, M.'s P., were visitors to the Masterton races yesioixhy. Mr George Coker, after spending six months in Now South Wales, returned to -Masterton yesterday. Before leaving Sydney he met several I former residents of Masterton, ini eluding three pressmen, Messrs Sid. Wickerson, H. J. Tapperell and W. ■ McKcnzie. They were all in a flourishing condition. Mr.Edward Page, banister, has accepted a position as Stipendiary Magistrate, and will assume his duties on November 10th as relieving Magistrate in the North Island. Mr Page is serving his fourth term as Mayor of Eketahuna, v and has been a i prominent figure in the public and. private life of that town. He also i holds the rank of Major on tho active unattached list. He is the eldest son,.of tho late Mr Page, for many years Town Clerk at Wellington. The Hawera Star records the death on 1 uesdav. at the age of lo years, of Mr John Brunette, an old colonist, and a resident of the town for 31 years. Deceased, with his wife and family, arrived in Xew Zealand from England in 1870, first settling in Christchurch. The late Mr Brunette, who was a jeweller by trade, was for many years a member of the Hawera Borough Council, a Justice of tho Peace, and a prominent Freemason. He leaves a grown-up family of eight, one cf whom (Mrs Phillips) ro- j .sides at Ngaio.
