THE POULTRY INDUSTRY.
'1 he Palmerston North Egg Circle lias unanimously endorsed a C-nrisx-; church proposal that tne Government should send a capable man to accompany a trial shipment of eggs to the Western Ports of Canada or the United States, nnd also approved the suggestion of the .New Zealand Poultry Association that the Government should submit the name of the man selected for the approval of producers. Jt was the general impression that Mr Merriu, of Christchurch, would mako the trip. While Palmerston North producers expressed willingness to contribute eggs to the shipment, it was thoughtlikely that for this first venture Christehurch would supply all that was necessary. Speakers anticipated that the western areas of America would experience high prices in winter for eggs, a"d a keen faith was revealed that if the exports succeeded the egg industry would leap ahead to rival that of dairying. Government grading was considered indispensable. One speaker mentioned that in the apple industry the Government guaranteed shippers a net return of a penny per pound. He thought egg shippers might waive any claim to ■guarantee, especially ps some sections of people would regard any export of eggs at all with hostility, but they J could show the Government a good J title to the one thing they wero al- j ready asking. This view the meet- ' ing endorsed. I During the proceedings the sec-/ retary of the. Palmerston Circle, whose output is .1000 dozens per month, said the committee had arranged for a trial storage of eggs in Wellington told chambers. The storage would be i n crates of thirty dozen, with cardboard divisions, costing 4s, and the charge of Gd per cubic l foot irrespective of.time \ra.-, equal to | only about Is per crate. Tf the experiment should be successful it will be repeated more extensively a littlo later. The storage agents who have had experience with egg. s for years past promise that if the ergs go in good they will come out good.
