. WHAKATAKI BKAXCH. \ A meeting of the Whakataki branch, of the Provincial Farmers' Union was held at their rooms on Saturday, October 12th. Present—Messrs W. Harvey (chairman), A. Brightwcll, V. Barton, C. Hud-son, P. Bel'.iss, E. > T. Barton, ii. Barton, Mason, and; Pain. ; Discussion was chiefly informal, 1 concerning the cost of telephone line 1 erection to tlie Pakewai. In referring to the cost of poles, jarrah was said to cost about live shillings per pole, whereas a concrete pole 15ft long, with a base of 8 inches square and a top of four inches square, wa~ estimated to cost about four 6hillings. In tbe event of several subscribers coming on to the existing private line, it wa-s considered necessary to duplicate the line and substitute stronger jKile's than the existing iron standards. Suitable rules were adopted, and posted up in the reading room for members' perusal. As it was reported that no tender had been sent into the Postal Department for the conveyance of weekly mails between Whakataki and Aohanga, the secretary was instructed to ascertain what the conditions of contract were as to time of receipt and return of mailman. Messrs Eelliss and Tunis wore- appointed to the Fire Insurance Committee. The- Land and Assessment Bill, the Valuation Amendment Bill, the Public Service Bill, and several others were laid on the table for members' perusal. 'The proposal to hold a. produce exhibition in the autumn war; not considered feasible; although]' it is to bo hoped that those able to do sn might exhibit their season's results on some csuitablo date.
