NAVAL DEFENCE
REPLY TO SIR JOSEPH WARD. BY COMMONWEALITI MINISTER. (Received Last Night, 9.30 o'clock-} SYDNEY, October 14. ' Tho Hon G. F. Poarco, Commonwealth Minister of Defence, replying to Sir Josepr Ward, quotes the latter'.s proposals to tho Rt Hon Reginald McKenna, contained in the reports of the Imperial Conference. Sir Joseph Ward thon sitid: "I, howover, consider it desirable that a portion of the China and Pacific Unit remain in New Zealand waters, and suggest that two now cruisers, three destroyers and two submarines should be -detached from tho China Station in time of peace, and bo stationed in New Zealand waters, these to be under the Admiral of tho China Unit. 'Hie flagship should make periodical Visits to New Zealand, and there should be an interchange of the services of the cruisers between New Zealand and China, under conditions to be laid down." Mr Pearcc concludes by saying: "If that is not a proposal to take tho control of tho China and Pacific Unit out of tho hands of tho Admiralty I would like to know what it is."
