MONTHLY MKKTJNG. The monthly meeting of the M«»terton County Council was held yesterday, there being present Crs \V: 1 J Welch (chairman), H. J. 'I oogood, 1)' J Cameron, A.. I.Percy. I). l«or«iuan, and A. Murray. Leave -..1 absence was granted to Crs Beetham, . Kebbell and Millar. Ho also asked that something be done to tho „,ad in the locality, and offered ■the services of a man for a fortnight. -Tho matter was left in the h«mls of Cv Foreman and the engineer. Mr YV. Davidson asked for the lease of a portion «f tlie riverbed adjacent to Mr W. Dobson, that the drain on his road frontage he cleaned out.—.Referred to the engineer; with p:)\ver to act. He was j strongly in favour cf the work being { put through, as it would reduce the distance to Pahii'.tua. considerably. He could not understand why this eon- , neetion should have been neglected.— On the motion o.f Cr Murray, the clerk was instructed to inform Mr Lavsen •that the track was not under the control of the Council, but was in the hands of the Government. A communication was, received from the National (Peace Society of Now Zealand. inviting co-operation in re- , sisttng the provisions of the Defence 'Act. —The Council refused to co-ope-

Mr C. F. Vallance asked for tho services of the County engineer in laying off about lialf a. mile of road. —The request was granted, subject to tho usual conditions. Mr G. Ji. Sykos, M.P., intimated that ho would .have- pleasure in cooperating with other country representatives, in the matter of securing an amendment of the law in. reference to tho collection of rates on' native lands. The chairman and Cr Cameron wero authorised to «igu .am agreement concerning the closing of that portion of the Blairlogio road passing through the property of Mr Taylor. Mr ]•'. J. L'right drew .attention to the stagnant water pool in front if the Blairiogie Junction Hotel.—.Referred to the engineer, to take action. The Masterton Agricultural High School ivstablishment Committee solicited support in the establishment of an agricultural high school at Alastorton.— Dealt with by the Finam-3 Committee. A communication was received from Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P.. covering -i letter from the Minister of Public Works concerning a grant for the .Hircrxdale ,'..ad. The. Masterloi Borough. tramway liconso was granted to Mi J. C. Ewington. It was decided that ;i special mooting bo held on October 23rd, to cornfirm an alteration in the by-laws. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The report of the Finance. Committee was read as follows:—Tlio Finance Committee mot tin's morning. There were present—Crs 7). J. Cameron (chairman), W. J. Weld), D. W. Foreman, A. J. Percy ami A. Murray. The treasurer reported as follows: General fund account, <]r, £2806 19s -Id; local bodies loans account, er, £520 17s. Th<> accounts showed a debit balance of £1741 los 7d. The receipts since September 10th totalled £ll9-1 6s 3d. Accounts amounting to £l4lO 17s {Jd were passed for payment; Tihe draft agreement prepared by the County solicitor in connection with the proposed modification of the remaining W ork to be performed at the northern approach was placed before the meeting, and it was' resolved that it bo a recommendation to the Council to approve of the draft agreement and submit the same for the consideration of the Borough Council. GENERAL. On the motion of Or Murray, it was decided that a 400-gallon tank be procured for the roadman's cottage «t Alfred ten. The matter of repairing a road in tho-Te Ore Ore estate was left in the. hands of Cr Percy and the engineer.
