'in.' foiio.riug evening tin' organiser reached I'iei.oii, ami here agan. •.mis received most cordially. Anon iiiirty or forty persons attended tho j meeting, in spue of a bij£ couniei attraction in tli;> shape of a bazaar., i jn.st across tho street. Mr Maitlaiul, ex-mayor of Picton, presided, am, strongly urged those present to form ii Circle. Not that much persuasion J was necessary, for over twenty in the room handed in their names, besides ; others who had previously promised . to join. , There are a small number of J poultry-keepers iu Picton in a small way, but they are desirous to see better conditions prior to operations. Last week eggs in Picton wero only realising Bd. per dozen, and wheat was up to ss. (kl. per bushel, and this in spite of the fact that j it is a grain-growing district. i Blenheim and Johnsonville wilalso shortly be stormed by the Cooperative Egg movement, >and afc'thisj rate of progress there is every hope that it will not be long before the industry becomes at last established on •a sound cemmoreial footing. Surely it would be more consistent if auctioneers would take more trouble when advertising poultry for yah.. Ii i■■ "Idem, in the country towns, [ that, rhey will specify what kinds <:f poultry they are selling, and even ' | when they do, perhaps, ii will not be j advertised until the morning of the sale. This is detrimental to their business, as it moans a . smaller attendance with a consequent low prices. Auctioneers of other stock find "it worth their while to specify | what will he in their yards at each ' rale, and thoug.li there is a consider- ( r.ble monetary difference in vaiues I between poultry and other stock, we would consider this is all the more ! reason to push the sales of the for- ' A nv.v. Tn fact, as poultry are general- t ly advertised we consider it, to say the least, "paltry." The fniit industry has twenty inspectors and instructors, and Die bee-keepers several, while, the poultry industry is represented by one' in- « dividual, and at a iniich lower salary 1 than the fruit exports. Why? Sim- | nly because, it is your poultrymen's | fault, you have no systematic unity, p and voiir ideas and forces are scatter- I ed like chaff before the wind. The' lOgg Circles will help you to obtain § more advice and assistance. Get in- '{> to them, quick- and lively, and while ,' ji yen are about it join one which keeps \ [; expenses down to bedrock. Rome cir- ! eles co.-r. their members un to 2itl. ll] per dozen to market thoir esrgs. v.hilo I one in 'Uasterton, the Utility Circle, | '••in do it For }d. and, on the average. I obtain as gor.;d a nrice as others. . | Poultrykeepors should make it a spec- j ial objective to talk the matter over ' wit!; the genial chairman Mr IT J. t O'Loary. ' } While mankind inhabit the earth, I reforms will always be wanted. We i I must progress. It is against nature j for "nyf.biug to stand still, or we J would staviiiite. and the poultry in- j \ is in need of very drastic al- | ! terutions. Wo badly require more j j Cev-v.T.mont poultry instructors. We ' j desire very many experiments lying | carried out: in mnnv matters, we are \ all groping in the dark. Under the j Present uirrangomonts the Poultry j! Division of ,the Agricultural Depart- • I ment i.s quite unable to take up much scientific investigation. True, the Department will receive and ex- j amine dead birds, but prevention is worth many cures, and prevention, in most cases, will be assisted by greater knowledge. The exact economic values of salt, meat, green foods, the true causes of dead in the she'll, j the need of fattening depot-s. and all matters which the present administration could help.
