THE BUCHANAN HOME
CRITICISED IN PAHTATUA. After the transaction of charitable aid -business at the meeting of the Pahiatua County Council on Saturday. Cr Hodgins alluded to A report published recently that old age cases were being sent to the Buchanan Home for Incurables at Greytown. He asked was there not a.n institution for old age cases at Masterton. The chairman replied that there was the Solway Home. Cr Hodgins said it bore out what he said some months ago, that there would lie the expense of two homes. If there wore no incurable cases, tho Buchanan Home should be closed up. He thought a protest should bo made to the Hospital Board. Cr Bolton said a number of the cases from the Solwav Home had been transferred to the Buchanan Home. The chairman said a number of the Solway Home cases were being boarded out at Masterton, as there was not accommodation for them at the home. There Was no accommodation for women at Solway. Cr Matthews said that if one home was full up the patients should bo put in the other. He criticised tho Buchanan Home, saying it was put when> it was not required. (Hear, hear.) The ratepayers had been saddled with the expense of its upkeep, tie said that Mr Buchanan wanted to appear benevolent. Mr Matthews deplored the fact that oneeighth of the total income of tho county was going towards charitable aid'. The chairman explained that Cr Bolton and himself had blocked a proposal at the lasfc meeting of the Board for more expenditure. The discussion then terminated.— Herald.
