Massey gave notice to move certain new clauses in the Land Bill, and gave notice of his intention to introduce tho Pollution of Water Bill. WAIHI STRIKERS. Mr Glover gavo notice to ask the Premier if he would immediately release tho Waihi strikers now in gaol. The circumstances under which they wore imprisoned had not, ho maintained, justified that end. MEMBER FOR EGMONT. Mr Wilkinson, the new momber for I Egmont, was sivorn in, and took his | seat, Mr Okey acting as his sponsor. WANGANUI RIVER TRUST. Tho Hon W. F. Massey moved the second reading of the Wanganui River Trust Amendment Bill, providing that the Wanganui River Trust may lease their lands for periods up to 42 years. Mr Russell congratulated tho Premier on bringing in a genuine leasing Bill. He had evidently recognised that there should be some land reserved from the despoiler. He advocated that the Government should institute a periodic revaluation of the leases. » Mr R. McKenzie said the time had arrived when the compulsory revaluation clause should be inserted in evorv lease.

After considerable discussion, the Prime Minister, in reply, pointed out that the Bill dealt only with lands held by the Wanganui River Trust, and was intended to enable it to obj tain income for improving the river, and so reducing its claim on tho Government for a subsidy. DEFENCE OF PRISONERS. Tho Hon A. L. Herdmnn moved the second reading of the Justices of the Peace Amendment Bill, which provides for provision by the Crown of counsel for tho assistance of accused who are unable afford that aid. Messrs Witty and Russell congratulated the Minister on having taken up a Bill originated by his predeces sor, Mr Hanan. The Bill was read a second time. PHARMACY BILL. The Pharmacy Amendment>Bill was rend a second time.
