SHIPPING ENQUIRY

VERDICT OF THE COURT. FOUNDERING OF THE TATHRA. (Received Last Night, 10.15 o'clock.) SYDNEY, September 27. The Court has concluded the inquiry into the foundering of tho vessel Tathra at the New Hebrides on January 4th. It was agreed that the vessel took in so much water that she became unmanageable. The Court was unable to discover how the water was shipped. The master's theory that the water entered the open portholes was untenable. The master's and officers' certificates were returned. The Court held that it was unwise to omit sounding well, twice daily, and that, every ocean-going ship or such tonnage should be compelled to carry a ready-bent minimum amount of canvas.
