MASTERTON'S PROSPERITY

AN INTERESTING STATEMENT

In the course of his address at the annual meeting of tho Masterton Chamber of Commerce yesterday, Mr A. Henderson, the retiring president,, stated that a vory good index of the prosperity or otherwise of a district could be gauged from the bankruptcy returns. He had obtained from the records a return showing the number of bankruptcies from Ist October, 1907, to 30tli September, 1912, in the Masterton and Wairarapa districts. Tlio return was as follows:—

, Sines December, 1911; no bankruptcies had been recorded in the Masterten borough. Another indication of prosperity could he gathered from the report of tho Labour Department, for the .year ended 31st March last. This showed that building permits were issued for sixty-six buildings in . the borough, and the estimated cost of these was approximately £28,000. This showed almost twice the number of permits, and more, than double the cost of buildings, as compared with fcJio previous year.
