DEATH DUTIES.

Tito Government has a delicate subject to deal with in tho matter of blio remission of death duties on the Campbell and McCarthy bequests. These bequests will.' no doubt, bo of inestimable benefit to the provinces of Auckland and Wellington, but they will not affect the Dominion as n wliple. The death duties, on the other hand, belong to tho general body of people, and it is a question whether they should be called upon to make ■i sacrifice for particular localities. It is conceivable that a dangerous precedent may he established, and tiljo Government ,~wijl, probably decline to make a remission- of the duties on this account.
