VICE IN SYDNEY
RAIDS ON HOTELS. VIOLENCE USED; MONEY STOLEN. (Received September 20, 9.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, September 20. A man armed with a revolver visited three hotels in the city yesterday. At tho first he paid two visits, threatening the licensee on each occasion. At the second he was accompanied by two mates. A customer who was flashing gold in a parlour received a wound on the forehead from a knuckle-duster, but fled. The three men followed, firing one shot without effect. They returned to the bar and ordered drinks. The landlady refused to .supply them, and the men departed. The., climax occurred at Durrack's Hotel, at the Corner of Elizabeth and Campbell street's, at four o'clock. A man with his face swathed in a handkerchief, and carrying a revolver, burnt mto the bar, rushed to the till, and helped himself to the contents. The licensee, aged 72, closed with- the intruder and gripped his wrist. The man freed himself and decamped. The licensee pursued and grappled witli the robber, whose revolver went off, The sound of the shot attracted two policemen, who arretted tll° " ia .'Ti Reports of other robberies continue to be received. The licensee of a suburban hotel was robbed of £32. A Chinese gardener in the «?.me suburb lost £SO. In another suburb Hasonie jewels valued at £2O were stolen, and in a third suburb £2o worth of jewellery was secured. A large number of tradespeople have been victimised. A man giving the name of a prominent :lient telephoned an order, stating t.iat a boy would call for goods at n certain establishment. Unsuspectingly the . goods were handed oyer to the boy, over £IOO worth being obtained in this way. ACCUSED REMANDED. NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ACTIONS. (Received Last SYDNEY. September 20. George Cooling, tho perpetrator of the hotel sensations, has been remanded on a charge of stealing £2 from Durrack's Hotel, and maliciously shooting at the younger Dili-rack. He was allowed bail in £SOO. j Cooling urged that lie Had been drinking, and was not responsible for j his actions. He had not intended to steal or to do anything else.
