THE PUBLIC TRUST OFFICE.
A mild flutter has been caused in the Opposition camp by the publication of the report of the Civil Service Commission concerning the management of the Public Trust Office. Anybody tvho has a knowledge of the inner workings of things must be aware that the Public Trust Office has been a political shuttle-cock for many years past. The appointments made to the position of Public Trustee have been the subject of scathing comment both inside and outside the office. Sir | Joseph Ward jvill remember what happened when Dr. Fitchett was appointed to the position. He will remember how the senior officer in the. Department resented what was happening, and how ho insisted upon, and was given a solatium in the shape of increased salary. Sir Joseph will remember how money was lavished on champagne at the opening of tile new offices in Wellington at a period when nieni were .being put on relief work's in the city. Sir Joseph could tell m more tha.n the Commission has told up about appointments, etc, if he only dared to do so.
