RENTS IN SYDNEY
AN ABNORMAL INCREASE. (Received List Night, 9.25 o'clock.) SYDNEY, September IG. Mr "Dick" Meagher, in introducing a deputation representing the Labour Leagues, asking for legislation to regulate the abnormal increase in rents, said that the benefits of industri-.il legislation were expunged by the twice and thrice extortionate increases in rents. Instances were given of increases of fifty per centum and over. Families, it wns stated, Avere herding living in stables and yards. The Hon. James McGowen promised to give the ■ matter serious consideration. Ministers, he said, , hoped eoon to make a definite proposal. The Government, by making bricks'at half the private cost, should help the situation.
