Mr John Payne, M.P.. was a visitor to Masterton ycrterday. Constable Warrceford, formerly of Masterton, has been transferred from Mokau to Hawcra. Mr Alla,n Benham. of Wellington, has been appointed overseer to the Fketahuna- County Council. There were thirteen application for the position. The Rov J. E. Watts-Ditchfiekl .stated at last night's meeting, that to-day being his birthday, he would celebrate- it by speaking in New Zealand while per medium of the gramophone, an .address which he delivored in Sydney, would be repeated to his ■parishioners in Bethnal .Green, London. There passed away on Sunday at her late residence, Papawai, Ngaturi Honiara,, wife of Heiiare Parata, an<| by Iher first marriage wife of Manihon; Rangitakawhati. Deceased was one of the few ehieftainesses of the following Hapus: Ngatimoe, Ngatirua, Ngatimuretu. and several other hapus. There will'be a big tangi at Papawai.

Athya, Fallover, Morrison, Esson, Rogers, Mason, Van Stav. oren (Wellington), Henshilwood, Mc.Leiman (Christchurch).
Mr N. Nelson, who resigned the position of overseer to the Eketahuna County Council, to take, up farming in the Taranaki district, was presented with a large cut-glass ink pot set in a silver stand, by members of the Kkctahuna County Council on Saturday, In making the presentation, the County chairman, Mr J. Dawson, made eulogistic reference to the manner in which Mr Nelson had carried •nut Jiis duties. Crs B. Morriss, R. Pitcaithy, J. Hickman, J. Harrison. W. Duff and J. B. Carruthers endorsed the statements made by the chairman. Mr T. Moss, ex-chairman of the County, also attended, and detailed some of the experiences of the Council in the early days. The chairman also handed to. Mr Nelson a silver cheese and a butter and biscuit dish, for Mrs Nelson. The County employees also presented Mr Nelson with two silver-mounted pipes .and a cigar- ' holder. Mr Nelson feelingta responded. Another of tiro pioneers of the Mas•terton district, in the person of Mrs G. W. Mace, of Brammerton, passed away yesterday morning at tho advanced ago of eighty-five years, tho immediate cause of death being pneumonia. The deceased lady arrived in New Zealand from the Old Country nearly seventy years ago, and had resided nearly ever since in the Wairu- ' She was pre-deceased by her "T. husband in 1907. Her surviving family are Mrs Walter Mace, Mrs Baird (Brammcrton), and Mrs Bradbury (New Plymouth). She also leaves a number of grand-children and greatgrandchildren. Tho funeral will r\ach Masterton at 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday.
