Mi's E. C. Riddiford, of "Fern : Grove," Lower Hutt, leaves for a visit to England on the 27th of this month. Mr D. M. Yeats, headmaster of the Lower Hutt School, was success- - fidly operated on at tho Wellington Hospital on Friday last. The Rev J. E. Watts-Ditchficld ar- • rives from Wellington by the 11.3!) a.m. train to-day. He speaks to a mass meeting for men at 8 o'clock tonight in St. Matthew's Schoolroom. At tho Masterton Y.M.C.A. yesterday afternoon, Mr E. G. Amoore, tfho is shortly leaving Masterton, was presented with several books. In making the presentation on behalf of the members Mr .R. Sutherland wished tho recipient every success in his future sphere; and similar good wishes were expressed by others present. Mr Amoore suitably responded.

Much regreet will be felt in Masterton at tho news of the death of Mr S. Broome, of Waingawa, which sad event took placo on Saturday morning last after a short illness. The deceased, who was about 50 years of had carried on farming operations in Masterton for many years past, and was highly respected. He leaves a widow and five children nfi-r* mourn their loss. The funeral will leave the residence, West Taratahi, at 12 noon to-day for tho Masterton Cemeterv.

Mr and Mrs Eaton, of Rexwood Street, Carterton, celebrated their golden wedding on Friday, says the. 'News. Mr Eaton arrived in Wellington in the ship Gleaner in 1838, and in 1862 was married to a daughter of tho late Mr John Hooper, of the Taita, Hutt, where they lived for ten years.. Forty years ago Mr and Mrs Eaton removed to Carterton, and have resided here ever since. On Friday, at the old couple's residence, there was a family reunion to celebrate tho golden wedding, those present including three daughters and four sons, all of whom are married, and fifteen grandchildren. The family physician (Dr Johnston) was also present, ar.d proposed the health of the happy couple, which was enthusiastically honoured. Mr Eaton, who has been' in indifferent health for the past three years, was fortunately, well enough -to participate in tho gathering. Mr and Mrs Eaton were the recipients of many beautiful presents and numerous congratulatory tele-i-grams from all parts of the province.
