TOHUNGAISM

WAIROA, Last Night. At the Magistrate's Court to-day a case of tohungaism, arising out of the death of a, native, named Wiri Kupa, at Mohaka some time ago, was investigated by Mr Barton, S.M. Whare Taha was charged under tile Tohunga Suppression Act with certain unlawful practises. The case was conducted by Detective Kemp, Napier, and resulted in a conviction, the fine and expenses totally £33 9s 6d. It was proved that the accused had treated several persons at Mohaka and Wairoa for devils in sick persons whom he so terrified that they feared to call in & doctor. Ho suggested that some of the women were wasting their lives on old men, and made overtures on his own account. Accused in his defence denied treating the patients or charging them, but i he only prayed to God for them. Mr Barton characterised accused as a gigantic fraud,.and low blackguard, and expressed the hope that this case would be a warning'to the Maori peon's; noli to consult such an utter fraud.
