"K.lki.v. PJ*AFORE. ,r This opera, which is being produced on Wednesday and Thursday evenings of next week, by the Masterton opera- | tics, is brimful of pretty and tuneful j music. The chorus work of the So- ! ciety is said to be quite the strongest they havo ever had. The opening chorus by the sailors, "We Sail tho Ocean Blue," is a stirring number, and will put the audience in good humour at,once. The entry of Sir Joseph Porter's cousins and female relatives is set to a tripping chorus, which with tho dancing introduced is a brilliant "number* In Sir Joseph Porter's (Mr [Harry Hall) songs the chorus again I have some very effective work. Perhaps the chorus work in the finale of | the first act is the best in the opera. [This is full of variety, skilfully done. [Opening in a common time allegro I then into a pretty six-eight movement, | into which some marches are introduced, afterwards breaking in a three-two measure and,'ending in a brilliant cut Itime allegro. Buttercup (Miss B. Johnston) is allotted some choice numbers, which she does well. Commencing with tlie well-known valse song aftar which she has somo important ] recitative work. Her duet with the \ Captain (Mr H. F. Green) with the 1 danco introduced is sure to be a po- j pular item. The box plan for botln nights is fast being booked up at the Dresden. A full practice will bo held in Murray's Hall to-night at 7.30 o'clock.
ASTERTON PICTURE COMPANY.
"A WOMAN'S WAY. 1 '
The current programme at the Town Hall seems to have "caught.on" with picture, lovers, as was evidenced last night by the very big attendance that was present. The various films were highly appreciated, and were accorded very unstinted applause. "A Woman's Way" came in for special commendation, and is certainly well deserving of all the good things said of the film, which must be considered one of the highest class of dramatic photo-play yet shown to »a Masterton audience. The remaining films were heartily enjoyed, there being not one dull moment during the performance. This splendid programme will bo shown tonight for the last time, and to-morrow evening an entire change will bo submitted, when several sensational films will be screened, including the "Stranded Star of Canada," the Home vessel which wont ashore at Gisborne. The usual matinee will be held in the afternoon, when the kiddies are assured of their usual weekly treat.
THOMPSON-PAYNE PICTURE-. The change of programme which was presented, to the large audience at the Foresters' Hall last evening was an excellent one in all respects. It was a varied programme, and was greatly appreciated. Other exceptionally fine dramas were "Captain King's Rescue," "An Indian Martyr," "The Three Grenadiers." ""Music Hall Hatred," ;fnd "lodgings for the Night." "Honour and the Sword" was a pretty story of a millionaire's son who falls in love with a fencing girl belonging to a theatrical company. A hasty marriage is rapidly followed by the parents of the man cutting him • off. Hard but honest toil follows, and as the hero is working his way up an old rival plays him false, and dishonour stares him in the face. To decide the knotty problem the wife fights a duel with her husband's scheming rival. The millionaire witnesses the conflict, and after the disarming of the rival all things are put right again. Several excellent comic films were also screened. "Working for Hubby" is a screaming "Bunny" comedy. The best was probably "When the Firebell Rings." "Getting His Money," and "The Furs" were also very good. A Gauinont Graphic was interesting, and another novelty film showed the different stages in a baby's life in a series of successive jumps that were highlv .diverting. The above programme will bo screened again to-night.
