ARREST OF WELL-KNOWN DOCTOR.

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night.
There wag a .sensation in the city today when it was noised abroad that Dr. O. J. Russell was arrested on. &i serious charge. ...Dr Russell, a member.of the North Canterbury Education Boty-d, and a? prominent member of several local, societies, was arrested by Detective** Ward and Gibson, on a warrant charging him with having'unlawfully used, an instrument.
In the afternoon Dr. Russell' wa& Formally charged before Mr Bishop, S.M., with having on June 28th, 191?, unlawfully used an instrument with intent' to procure a; miscarriage-. ChiefDetective Bishop prosecuted. The accused was: not represented hy 'counsel. On the application of the police the accused w-His formally remanded to September ,10th. It is stated that a further remand till September 16th will oe applied for. Accused applied for bail, and the Chief Detective urged for the -sureties to be substantial. Bail was- allowed accused m £2OO, and one surety in £4OO.
Dr Charles James Russell' is no 1 *- eighty-three years of Age, and studied medicine at..the University of Glasgow, gaining the degrees of F.P.S., and L.S.A. in 1869/ He,took a. diploma at Syracuse University, New York, in 1876. In ChrisWhurch Dr Rir?se-lt led a prominent quasi-public life, taking a particular interest in social and educational matters.
At present "e is a member of th© Education Board of North Canterbury, and held a prominent place in the School Committees Association. Dr Rus&ell is an active member" of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Horticultural Society, and a great number of other organisations. He judged the cats exhibited '» st the last Poultry Club's Show.
