AUSTRALIA v. MIDDLESEX AND SURREY. AUSTRALIA 8 FOR 225. (Received September 3, d.oo a.m.) LONDON, (September I>. The above match was commenced yesterday, and at the end of the day's play the Australians had knocked up 225 for the loss of eight wickets. There was a fine, cool breeze, and a moderate attendance. Rain foil early, but the pitch, being protected through the night, was fairly good. _Among those present was William Caffyn, one of the greatest cricketers England has seen, and who was in his prime in the 'forties. Caffyn is now 84. The Aiistralians won the toss, Mayne and Jennings opening. They made an excellent showing throughout. A feature of the innings was the. partnership of Bardsley and Minnctt, who added 56 runs for the fifth wicket, and Bardsley and Hazlitt, who added 91 runs for the sixth wicket. Fifty runs were scored in 70 minutes, and the century appeared in 120 minutes. . Bardsley lost his wicket in. trying to turn Hitch. He gave a perfect, chanceless splendid innings, and was-particularly good on the leg side. He scored eleven fours, eight threes, and was 200 minutes in reaching his century. The spectators were treated to a brilliant exhibition of hit- | ting during the partnership of Bardslev and Mmnett.
