Odessa, Tho Rover and Kilrain are tho prevailing favourites for the Marton Handicap, while in tho Flying Grown Pearl and Styx are at a short price. -King's Favourite, who raced with some success as a two-year-old, will m'ako his debut as a three-year-old in tho Hack Scurry at Marton. An- i other horse in the same race that is spoken well of is Ariatiatia. The latter is trained by Prosser, and is said to have wonderfully improved. i The only local horse to compete at Marton is the Merriweo mare Afterthought, which W. Garret railed through yesterday. She is very well at present, and may run a good race with her light impost. Acceptances for all events and entries for tho Trial Plate at the Dannovirko meeting close with the secretary to-night at 9 p.m. B. Keeper will take Gay Lass through to Dannevirko for the Trial Plate. With £520 in stakes the Masterton Racing Club have taken no undue risks in connection with their forthcoming meeting. The chief event of the day is endowed to the extent of £l2O, which is tho smallest amount given for a Masterton Cup or Handicap for many years. A good judge of racing hit tho mark when he remarked that instead of reducing £»> stakes for a one-day meeting, clubs would do well to increase them. Rig fields and good horses may be relied upon to attract the public in large numbers.
