FREIGHT ON MOTOR CARS
' . v DEPUTATION TO A MINISTER
WARNING TO SHIPPING COMPANIES.
(By Telegraph— Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH Last Night
A deputation from tho Canterbury Automobile Association waited upon the Hon F. M. B. Fisher, Minister of Marine, to-day, to protest against the excessive charges made by the Union Steamship Company for the carliiago of motor cars between Lyttelton and Wellington. The Minister, in his reply, said he was bound to say lie had heard a good, many motor car ownei'i who had been desirous of touring tho south stating that they were practically debarred from bringing their cars owing to the extortionate charges by the Union Company. He would be pleased to make representations to the company on behalf of the Government, but the Government exercised no control over the tariff charged by the Union and .Huddart Parker Companies. "I shall be very glad to communicate on the matter with Mr Holdsworth, tho. general manager of tho company," continued Mi- Fisher. "I don't know what to do with the matter, which is one of the great evils arising from monopoly. The only way to cope with it is to run a State service, and the only way tho Union Company can prevent that is to act in reason. That is speaking plainly."
