A telegram from Auckland announ—oes tho death of Mr W. H. Smith,, of tho firm of Smith and Cuughey,. drapers, at the ago of sixty-one.
Mrs Mary Pickup, who died at thoresidence of her .daughter, Mrs McKain, of Eltham, at the advanced ageof 93 years, was one of Wanganui's oldest residents. She arrived in Wanganui in 1856, and went through the troublesome times consequent on the- '' Maori War.
Mr H. Fannin, <a member of thestaff of Messrs Dalgety and Co., lea- • ves to-morrow for Stratford, whero lie Jias accepted a position in the officeof Mr W. G. Malone, solicitor. MrFannin has had considerable experience in legal work, and will leave for his new sphere with the best wishes of-a wide circle "of friends. Mr S. H. Conder. who has recently been in charge of the Westport ■ branch of the New Zealand ClothingFactory, .has been promoted to thecharge of the Ma.ste.rton branch of the same firm, and takes mi his duties here as from to-day. The following is from the, Westport News: "Mr Condor was entertained by a large and representative gathering at the Cosmopolitan Hotel" on * Thursday" nighty iho Mayor, presiding, .and., presented with; a cafe? of-pipes;'.'" High,/tribute wa,s paid tfl.Mr Conder's ."citizenship. and.the. able manner in which he,had conducted tho branch business of Hallenstein Bi-os. Best wishes were also extended to him in his new position a.s manager of the firm's Masterton branch. Appreciative speeches weremade by Messrs Leaver. Harker F. F. Munro, J. C. Young. R. \Yhyte. A. 0. Hansen. Taylor and Back, MiConder suitably implying."
