KECEM RACE DESCRIBED
".MAGNIFICENT STRUGGLE."
(Received August 28, 10.80 p.m.)
SYDNEY, August 28
The Herald's London special correspondent describes the B:irry-Arnst race for the sculling championship of the world as a magnificent struggle. There was never any doubt as to the result. "Barry is the more finished oarsman, and as it hnppcnd tho day was one on which a man with skill, finish, and neatness had all the advantage. The opinion of judges was that Arnst was not up to the form he allowed in the Zambesi race. The belief is that the suddonness with which he reduced his weiglit proved too great a strain, and the result makes one doubt very much if Arnst will ever scull for tho championship again. Some friends and backers appear to take it for granted that he will make an attempt to regain it, but one's personal opinion is that he meant it when he told an interviewer: "I may give up sculling. It ig terribly hard work.' He will think the matter over during the holiday he is taking at Boulogne."
EX-CHAMPION WAS NOT AT HIS BEST. BARRY THE BETTER SCULLER. (Received August 28. 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY. August 28. The Daily Telegraph's London correspondent says:—"Arnst was not at his best. The water was bad for both, but was worse for the Englishman, who had the worse course for threequartors of the way, mid gave away more than a stone and a-lialf in weight. From every point of view except physical strength he is a better sculler than Arnst.' 7 i BARRY CHALLENGED.
(Received This Morning 12,20 o'clock.) LONDON, "August 28.""'
Arnst has deposited £IOO with the newspaper Sportsman, and challenged Barry for the worlds and English cham pionships for £SOO aside.
Arnst wishes to race "before November, but Barry thinks that ha should allow more time, and;will not answer definitely yet, but promises to race Arnst.
