Mr H. H. Seed, Deputy-Commis-sioner of the St. John Ambulance Association, will make his annual inspection of the Masterton divisions of 4ho Brigade on Thursday next.
An old settlor of the Wavcrley district, Mr Donald 'McDonald, passed away on Monday, after a brief illness, aged 76 years. He came to New Zealand in 1863. and for 30 years lived in the Waverley district.

The Hawera Star announces that Mr A. McKeown, of Pihama, will contest the Egmont seat in the Liberal interest. The other candidates for the seat are Messrs Astbury (Liberal) and Wilkinson (Government). Mr W. H. Judkius.' the well-known journalist and social reformer, of Melbourne —one time a. resident, ; of Masterton—who has been suffering from cancor for nearly two years, has induced his medical attendants to operate once again upon him in the hope that he will he afforded relief. He was to go into Dr Lee's private hospital in Melbourne last Tuesday.
One of the few remaining veterans ■of the Indian Mutiny, in the person ■of Corporal Thomas Flavin, formerly of H.M. 86th and 57th Regiments of foot passed away at Waikanaiti last week, in his 79th year. He saw service in the "Die Hards" in New Zealand, and after his discharge was engaged in gold mining on the West w"~Qoast. He then settled on a small isjSprm in the Marten district. _ subsequently removing to Waikanaiti.
The marriage of Miss Lulu Bolton to Mr Ralph Robertshaw was celebrated at Holy Trinity Church, Woodvillo, yesterday afternoon, when the church'was crowded, with friends and relations. The'ceremony was performed by tho Rev Canon Eccles, assisted by"the Rev Noel Robertshaw, <if Hastings. Miss Bolton wns ntt»nd#>d bv four bridesmaids. Miss Maud Bolton and Misses Beauchamn and .Abercmmhift fWollinsrton) and Miss Hartgill (Dannovirke). Tho bridegroom was supported by Messrs X. Robertshaw. J. Bolton. Druce and Knight. After the ceremony the ?mosts b-o'p entertained at Oete by Mr and Mrs S. Bolton.
The death occurred on Tuesday rf Mrs A. W. Begg, relict of the late Mr A. W. Begg. at the age of 87. Mrs Begg arrived fn the Dominion with Vr husband in 1860. and hcl resided in Napier ever since. She was tho daughter of the Rev Josiah Wilson, of the Irish Presbyterian Church. A grown-up family of seven remain to mourn the loss of their mother: They are Mr S. Begg, on the staff of tho illustrated London News. Mr J. W. Begg. a well-known Sydney lawyer. Mr f. Begg. of Sydnev. Mrs R. "McFarlnne, Mrs Couper Rohison (formerly Mrs Carlisle), of London. Miss Begg, of Napier, and Mrs R. Carter, of Wellington.
1 A pleasing function took place in Murray's Hall, Masterton, last even-. . ing. when a number of friends assembled to do honour to Mr G. Douglas on the occasion of bis, approaching marriage. Mr W. Dixon presided, and in a. hanny sneech referred to the esteem in which Mr Douglas fra'-s held by n largo circle of friends, and made special reference to his standing as n hockey and football player, in which cnoarity lie bad done excellent service for Masterton clubs. A nnmbir of others present spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Douglas's popularity. A number of presentations were made further tertifvincr to the general ps+epm in which Mr Douglas was held. Mr Douglas suitably responded. During the evening a number of r ongs and recitations were rendersd by members ef the companv, the singing of "Aukl Lang Svne" concluding a very happy gathering. Mr .T. A. Renall, formerly of Masterton, has been elected one of tho members of the newly-formed Franklin County Council. Mr Renall was •elected for the Aw'hiti Riding by a narrow margin. Ho has only been in tho district a, short time, but he ' miiekly ivon his way to the chairmanship of the Waipipi Road Board. The local pa ner. referring to Mr Rennll. savs: "Before coming to this district Mr Renall (whose father's name '•ns one of the most familiar in the Wa.irarn.pn) occupied many prominent nublic positions, both in county and boron Hi. Not the least of theso was b'is office as Mavor of Masterton. to which honourable position was elected on two occasions. The list of .bis public services in the province that knows him best is too long to print here, but it may be said without fear of contradiction that Mr Renin's public experience is longer and more varied than that of any other member of the Council."
