WAIRARAPA v. MANAWATU. ]
WAIRARAPA OUTCLASSED.

PALMERSTON N. 3 Last Night.
Wairarapa played Manawatu here on Saturday in the presence of several hundred persons on a very hard ground. Tho Wairarapa team was slightly changed Johnson (Masterton) I replacing Golder in the forwards and F. Groube replacing O'Brien at halfback. Wairarapa evidently felt the effects of the hard game against Taranaki. Manawatu won tho toss and kicked off with a strong wind at thenbacks. Manawatu pressed in theearly stages of tho game. Tait, the Wairarapa full-back, was good on defence. Henderson opened a good rush and Wairarapa were unlucky not to score. Manawatu again pressed and good forward work by Carroll and Bennett enabled the latter to score. The kick at goal failed. The local team continued to press and from a mark by Bennett in a good position Hughes placed a beautiful goal. Wairarapa now pressed but a good chance* was missed. Hedge and Ross were prominent in a good rush, a force resulting. Give and take play followedand from a scrum in the Wairarapa-twenty-five Hope scored an easy try, tho spell ended Manawatu 9, Wairarana 0.
In' the second spell Wairarapa pressed, and Ross scored early from an opening made by McKenzie. Spaceman failed with the' kick. The local men again took the aggressive, butt p-ood defensive play by Groube and Tnit saved the situation. Wairarapa missed several good chances by bad passing. The game was very even, for the greater, part of this spell. Manawatu pressed towards the end of the spell, and Bennett scored from a forward rush, making the score Manawatu 12. Wairarana 3. On the calr of time Hughes kicked a good goal from a mark. The final scores were r Manawatu 15, Wairarapa 3. The visitors were palpably stale, and put. no dash into their play, their backsbeing nerceptiblv off colour. McKenzie left the field ten minutes after the commencement of tho second spell, his knee,being.put out. Golder took'his place. On the day's play tho best team won.
RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH.
1 AUCKLAND, Last Night. ;; Auckland beat Wellington in the Jjllanfurly, Shield match yesterday hy 114 points to nil, after a keenly-con- [ tested game. The attendance reached over .15,000. Mr McKenzie, of Carterton, was referee. The first spell was very evenly contested, both sides showing at times brilliant play. Towards half time Auckland began, to have the better of the game, and several forwarcU'rushes nearly ended in* score. Mackay secured the ball near ,!-tho line and, racing down, scored. The kick failed. In tho second half 'Auckland had all the better of the play, the forwards doing solid op«n 1 work. The northerners repeatedly iuj.vaded Wellington's territory, and I Mackay scored three more tries for j his s,idc 3 tho last being converted by I Fivcrson. WELLINGTON,, Last Night, The Wellington "B" team of Rugby representative? wore defeated by Marlborough by 10 points to 3. The attendance' was small'. Play., except f.v occasional .flashes, was dull, Marlborough made things merry at the start,"and from a rush to Wellington's twenty-live Daly got over, scoring thefirst try, Jackson failed -to convert. Sheridan got the next try a few miuutes after. Wellington's back work was very bad, and they missed several chances. Wellington's bad passing and'careless play was noticeable. irTthe second spell. Once only did" they pass well, and Lambert scored a try. McKonxie failed to x convert. Marlborough's energy, which had, been fading away, livened.up after this, and Parker' got in a drop-kick which gave his side four more points. The game ended: Marlborough 10 points, Wellington 3. The annual Rugby match between Canterbury College and Victoria College, played at the Athletic Park yesterday, resulted in a victory for the former'by 12 points to*.3. The visitors showed better cohesion than the home team, and should have put up more points than they did. They worked hard, and were constantly on. the ball, but their passing was bad and tackling not much better. Towards the finish, the game Avas scrap--Ipy and unscientific. At half time the scores were: Canterbury G,'Victoria 1 College 3. Canterbury was making the pace hot when the game ended. | The final scores were: Canterbury 12 ? I Victoria. College 3.
NELSON v. WANGANUI.
NELSON EASILY DEFEATED.
WANGANUI, Last Night. The Rugby representative matclt Nelson v. Wanganui was played on the Recreation Ground on Saturday in beautiful weather. There was a good attendance, and the ground was Tn fine condition. The result was an easy victory for "Wanganui by 35points to G." The local team ran over the visitors in the first spell, which ended: Wanganui 24, Nelson. 0. The second spell was more even, and tjw game ended as above. Wangamii's score consisted of eight tries, two being converted, a potted goal, and a kick from a mark, and Nelson's scoro consisted of a penalty try for obstruction, and a goal from a free kick. THE "LEAGUE MATCH.
WELLINGTON, Last Night. The New South Wales League teamcommenced its tour with, a match against Wellington yesterday, in the presence of a good number of people. The first spell was even. 11 points being scored by both sides, but the latter half of the same was purely in favour of the visitors, who. rattled on ! 34 points, to their adversaries' 2. Tho--tgame was very fast throughout, tin 5 -, j-visitors showing excellent knowledge ' and condition. The local combination i was completely outplayed in cvofv ! department. The game ended : New South Wales 45, Wellington 13. WANGANUI v. TARANAKT. I ■'WANGANUI, Last Night. In tho Northern League match between Wanganui and Tnranaki, tfc» former won by 27 points to 13. Mnet\ of the Taranaki team, sustained a ' broken upper jaw.
