THE MORTGAGE TAX.
Several Opposition newspapers are making an outcry at the proposal of the Government to exempt mortgages from taxation. They aver that this is an attempt to relieve the land of its fair share of taxation. Those who argue thusly • .forget that the land itself does not pay. It is the man. who occupies the land that pays. It has always appeared to us as a grot* injustice that men should, have to pay a -tax on land that is heavily mortgaged. Tlio amount of the mortgage should always be deducted,, and tho mortagee should be made to pay through tho income-tax. While the land-tax exists, this is the equitable way of dealing with mortgages, find •we heartily commend the Government on its proposals.
