AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE
A MANAWATU DEPUTATION
, (By Telegraph — Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, Last Night. A deputation of Manawatu settlors waited on the Prime Minister to-day to request that the agricultural college which the Government proposes to establish, should he erected at i'almerston North. It was urged by tho deputation that there could ho no more suitable place in the North Island for an Agricultural College than Palmerston North.
The Hon Mr Massey, in reply, said Parliament had yet to assent to the proposal for a college, though lie did not anticipate any difficulty in th.it direction. He was convinced that cho site would have to be on the main line of railway, and that it would have to be easy of access. At present he had four localities in his mind, each possessing individual advantages —in Palmerstoji North, Marton, WeI raroa. and Ruakura. At the two latter places the Government had considerable areas of land, and'the establishment of the college thero would obviate the exne-ndittire of a large sum of money in the purchase of a site. Regarding experimental farms, ho frankly said that some of them were not worth carrying on. He thought several of the Government farms would have to be disposed of, and the proceeds devoted to tho *.->s- j tablishment of an Agricultural College. He intended to pro thoroughly into tho whole matter during the recess, and would personally visit all tho suggested sites.
