Nixon, who retired a few days ago from the position of Collector of Customs at Wellington, died on Wednesday morning at the age of '57 years. Word has been received that Mr J.. Orr and the Misses Orr. of Martinborough, who have been on a visit tothe Old Country, left London forNew Zealand on the Ist hist., and expect to arrive in Martinborough about, the middle of next month.
Mr A. Miller, of Masterton, who for some time acted as secretary for the Masterton Homing Pigeon Club,, has been presented with a handsome silver-mounted umbrella, in recognition of,his services to the Club. Mr W. Gourlay. president, made the presentation.
Of thirty-five applicants for the Rectorship of the Timaru Boys' High School, three have been selected from which the final choice will be made. These are Messrs W. Thomas, headmaster of the Waimataitai State School (Timaru); Lnsk. assistant at Christ's College (Christchurch), and A, Stuekey. of King's College, Auckland.
I Miss Leekie. who lias ho.cn in charge of the Carswolls telephone bureau for some time past was tendered a farewell social on Wednesday evening. A very pleasant evening was spent, during which Miss Leckie was presented" with a cheque from the subscribers' and residents of the district. Mr R. Liverton. in making the presentation, referred in eulogistic terms to the many qualities possessed by Miss Leckie. and the esteem in. which she was held by the residents of the district. The friends of Mr J. H. Pauling, of Masterton, will be sorry to hearthat the internal complaint from, which he has been suffering has compelled him to again take to his bed. On Wednesday ho was suffering acute pain, but yesterday he was somewhat easier. The report that ho was to have undergone an operation is with-, out foundation. A wedding which, attracted considerable interest was celebrated in Masterton yesterday afternoon at the residence of Mr and Mrs H. T. Wood, the contracting parties being Miss Dora Hair, niece of Mrs Wood, and. Mr David Strang, of Dunedin. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev A. T. Thompson. The bride was given away by Mr Wood, and was charmingly attired in a di'ess of white ninon, trimmed with lace, and wearing a handsomo embroidered veil and carrying a beautiful bouquet of white roses and snowflakes. Mr and Mrs Strang left by the afternoon train for Wellington, en route to their future homein Dunedin.
