With tho advent of spring racing matters in racing circles in the Wairarapa assume a more busy appearance. During the past two months trainers have been giving thei charges an easy time, but now that tho tracks have improved, horses with near engagements will be kept up to tho collar. R. Knox has a nice string in work, including Sir Knox and several youngsters. The former has wintered splendidly, and having filled out a good deal, looks a typical handicap horse. The Sir Laddo colt should be a good stake earner in the coming season', unless as was the ease last season, the handicappers hold too high an opinion of him. The Eenzonian—Platypus filly in the same stable has developed into a nice three-year-old, although on the small side. Knox has two nicelooking two-year-olds in his stable, one bv Sir Laddo —Platypus and the other by Benzonian —Roney. W. Garret is keeping Afterthought up to the collar, in view of her Marton engagement next month. The Momwoe mare never looked better, and may this season improve upon her last season's form. Sir Solo is being restricted to slow work, but ho bears a bright lusty appearance, which indicates that he could soon be put to fast work. Killaloo and Bally Shannon in J. Phillips' stable arc both looking remarkably well. The former has made great improvement since being taken up. The spell the Kileheran horse had last year seems to have worked j wonders in him, and he has now set- j tied down into .a line type of race- - horse. It will be surprising if Killa- j 100 does not do something good this season.

Latlino is another liorso that has wintered well, and has thickened cnit a good deal. The majority of Sir Laddo's stock race better with age, and Latlino should in the coming season do his owner a good turn. . Mr C. F. Yallance's team of junipers arrived back at Clareville on Tuesday, and the trio seem none the- worse for the trip south. Leapuki also arrived on Tuesday. The latter showed fair form in his races, hut the distance was in each case too far for him. Hilarian in N. Williams' Clareville stable is said to be. showing good form over the small sticks, and will figure in htirdle racing during the coming season.

I' The scratching of The Rover Tor the C.J.O. Grand National Hurdle Race • cost double backers a lot of money. One Aucklander hacked tho eombinn* tion, Captain » ng j o aml Th(> Rovei . ; to win a largo sum.

( The Si livestock IT. gelding, Taialui, ! which wont amiss while being prepared at Riccarton for the C.J.O. Grand National Meeting, was brought back to Auckland on Thursday last. On the journey up Taiaha contracted /in attack of inflammation, to which lie , succumbed on Saturday morning. | Taiaha, which was trained by D. Morraghan, was an aged gelding, and his form over the big fences was most promising.- At the recent Gisborne meeting he won a double and ran second in both his engagements at the i Wellington Winter meeting.

The new totalisator ordered by the Auckland Racing Club was -to have been in working order and on exhibition during the present month, and full particulars arc expected next j mail. The totalisator is not an electric one, as has been generally snp- , posed, but is worked on a different principle, and its installation will probably mark a revolution in the working of the machine. The value of the French Derby this I year was £7-131 to the winner, £6OO to the second, and £3OO to the third.

The turnover at the Pari-mutuel on the raco was £39,006. One of the "charity" days in Melbourne this season will be utilised for a meeting in aid of the distressed and disabled jockeys' fund. A returned visitor from Hawke's Bay states that Mr T. H. Lowry's crack Bobrikoff is looking in splendid health, and his trainer is confident of his standing ft preparation.
