NAPIER, Last Night
Wellington defeated Hawke's Bay in the Rugby football match here today by 20 points to-15. The first half was very even, and ended with .the scores, level —each scoring 10 points. Both teams played with good combination, and the backs got in some good passing work. Wellington had the >best of the opening part of the second spell, and added seven points before Hawke's Bay scored. The latter livened up near the end of the game and added five points. Hawke's 'Vere vfgoi'ousTy when the whistle blew tor lio-side. 'Cunningham. Boyd, Sullivan, and Evenson scored tries, and Dingie and Nunn potted goals for Wellington. ■ Porohiwi and Johnson secured tries, one nf which Smith converted, and the latter kicked a penalty goal and Ashton potted a goal,for the losers.
WELLINGTON v. POVERTY BAY. ROTORUA, Last Night. . The Wellington representatives played Bay of Plenty here to-day in line weather. The visitors were superior in both backs and iorwards. and had the best of the game throughout. The first spell ended in favour of Wellington by 16 points to 6, the local scores beiiig notched in the early stages, through mulls on the part of a Wellington back. 1?or Wellington Wilson, McKcnzie and Elliott crossed tho line, Maefarlane converting twice, and putting over a free kick. In the second spell Poverty Bay put in some better. play, though the visitors were not extended. Roberts and Young scored for Wellington,. Macfarlane converting one. Roiigo Nuku scored for Bay of Plenty, the final scores being: Wellington 24, Poverty Bay D.
AUSTRALIAN TEAM IN NEW ZEALAND. WELLINGTON, Last Night. Tho League bootballers from New South Wales were given a civic welcome in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall this evening. The Mayor (Mr D. McLaren) welcomed the visitors, and expressed the belief that they would be able to show the local men some points. Messrs H. R. Miller and J. E. Blue responded. Iho former said, in reference to tho question of amateur or professional foothall, that this was an individual matter. The League provided for both the amateur and the professional game. Mr Blue said that before they left New Zealand they would convert 97 per cent, of the Rugby Union enthusiasts.
PALMEIiSTOX X., Last Night. The representative football matci) Manawatu versus Nelson, played hcie to-dav, resulted in a win for Manawatu' by 18 to 1(5. The game was closely contested, and was only v> 011 in the last two minutes. The back play of both sides was poor.
